A Hamilton man who persuaded a year-old girl to send him naked photographs of herself has been jailed for a year. Rowan Robert Douglas Hirst, 26, was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court on Monday, on charges of sending an indecent communication to a person under 16 years old, and possession of objectionable material. Hirst was 24 years old when, in January , he contacted the thenyear-old on Facebook Messenger, and began sending her a series of sexually explicit missives and invitations for her to stay with him. The communications were subsequently discovered and, in June this year, his phone was seized and examined by police. On the device they found 10 images and five videos of the girl engaged in sexual acts. Judge Kim Saunders took a start point of 12 months in jail on the indecent communication charge, and added six months for the possession charge. A 25 per cent discount for his guilty pleas and a further discount for his remorse and other factors brought the sentence down to 12 months in jail. As no address was available where he could serve a sentence of community or home detention, a jail term was the only option available. Hirst was also registered on the Child Sex Offender Register.
