Welcome to Middle School at AGS!
Lyn Mikel Brown on what adults — parents, educators — can do to lead girls to a more accurate idea of power and activism. They are seizing opportunities closed to previous generations — in science, sports, and leadership. The piece came on the heels of a slew of recent research that showed a rise in depression and anxiety and a dip in confidence for girls, especially as they enter middle school. Friends were telling me stories about their struggling daughters, particularly around social media and feeling left out. Around the same time, a group of us saw the movie Eighth Grade , about an apprehensive year-old girl enduring the last week of middle school. As we left the theater, several of the women immediately started talking about their own middle school experiences — how uncomfortable they felt, how horrible it was. They talked about scenes that resonated with them. I remember thinking: Wait. Have things really not gotten better for girls? My friends were in middle school 25, 30 years ago.

McNab House provides a space in which girls have the confidence to be adventurous, to reach academic goals and to develop a strong sense of self. We know that girls can be more courageous when they learn in a single gender environment. Collaborative learning spaces at McNab House allow girls to learn with and from their teachers and each other. Here, classrooms are places where effort and learning are visible at all times. New classrooms, art studios and science labs provide an academic arena for positive intellectual challenges. The curriculum for Years 7 to 10 enables all girls to become successful learners across core and elective subjects in humanities, sciences, arts, languages, and commerce. This is a place where girls can develop the dispositions that will lay the foundations for effective thinking and learning in VCE. In Middle School, girls and boys spend time together at lunchtime, in the school grounds and during co-curricular activities. Music, sport, drama and other opportunities further promote a sense of support and a positive, collaborative environment for girls and boys.
Middle School English provides a solid foundation in the use and understanding of the English language. Writing, grammar, reading, and vocabulary are integral parts of the English courses. Students begin practicing and polishing skills pertaining to different types of writing, such as narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive. With an emphasis on self-expression and expression of ideas, writing assignments encourage students to begin literary analysis and produce logical arguments in writing.
